![]() ![]() ![]() Paul Mehlin, Mehlin's eldest son and partner, is alse a practical piano maker, and a most auccessful businessman, and isvery popular in private and business circles. (Here follows specifications of fifteen yaluable and uaeful patents.) Mr. 129,727, a metallic agraffe cast in the plate, July 23d, 1872. Mehlin is an indefatigable worker and inventor. Mehlin decided upon starting in business for himself, ard with his sons formed the firm of Padl G. Behr Bros.) that had just started to manufacture pianos andwanted some one who could combine originality and individuality in their instrument. Not having scope enough for his individuality as an improver in this house, ne in 1881 became full partner in a reputable firm (Messrs. In 1865 he took a position with the Gablers and remained sixteen years, during which period he contributed many of his characteristic innoyations to these instrumenta. Later he was with Light xfe Bradbury, an equally prominent concern. Mehlin arrivad in New York in 1854, and at once entered the then great firm of Raven & Bacon, where he whetted and improved his former experience. Here he studied the first principies of acoustics as exemplified in scaling and general tone improvement "Mr. Having keen musical sensibilities, he learned to play the piano, and later entered the piano shop of Frederick Doerner, in Stuttgart, where he went through the regulation education of old time piano making, from case-making to the finesl expert regulating and toning. Born in Stuttgart, in 1837, his first mechanical experience was acquired in a first-class cabinetmaking establishment, where the making of fine art furniture was made a specialty. Mehlin, like so niany of our great piano makers, is a native of Germany. ![]() On the contrary, he thinks, and thinks wisely too, that there is plenty of room for the mprover, not the mere experimentalist, but for those duly qualified by ecientific, acoustic and practical knowledge as piano makers, backed by cultivated musical sensibilíties, so as to enable them to judge tone results from the standpoint of acoustics, and that of the cultivated artist. He is not one of those p'essimists who believe that the "excelsior" notch has already been reached and passed in the making of pianos.
